This graduate seminar explores historical trauma or unresolved intergenerational grief in Native peoples caused primarily by colonialism and its legacy. We will just as importantly explore the various means and mediums through which Natives attempt to heal from trauma. Objectives 1. To learn basic theories and forms of trauma, and how contemporary literature relates to trauma and theories of trauma. 2. To assess key historical events that have led to loss and trauma among Native groups in the U.S. and Canada. 2. To understand the impact of past and present colonialism on Native North Americans. 3. To recognize the tremendous resiliency in communities experiencing historical trauma. 4. To learn about cultural buffers to trauma such as literature, film, art and various healing rituals. |
