Service Learning Component (Optional)

"Service learning is a form of experiential education in which students engage in activities that address human and community needs (defined by the community) together with structured opportunities intentionally designed to promote student learning and development. Reflection and reciprocity are key concepts of service-learning."         Barbara Jacoby, 1996.

This class gives you the opportunity to do Service Learning by participating in several different programs. If you choose this option, a Service Learning designation will appear on your transcript. Service Learning credit requires approximately 15-20 hours of work. Opportunities this semester include

*  tutoring Native American students at the UI Native American Student Center
*  becoming a pen pal with a student at Lakeside High School on the Coeur d'Alene Reservation
*  assisting with the UI Native American Student Centers educational conference (November)
*  other programs/events with relevance to the course.

As part of your Service Learning experience you'll write a Reflective Essay illustrating what meaning you gained from the experience as connected to our course.

If you participate in the SL component of the course your Final Project Paper will be 5-6 pages in length, rather than 10-12 pages.
