ADVANCED POETRY FINAL PROJECT – PORTFOLIOS
English 491- Joy Passanante
To complete your commitments to Advanced Poetry Writing, you are responsible for writing at least 10 poems and for revising 6 of these thoroughly. You will prepare a folder (the kind with one pocket on each side)—on one side (left) you’ll put those poems that you did not choose to revise; on the other side (right), you’ll put the poems you have revised, the most recent revisions on top. Please number the revisions (#1 being the first revision you’ve done) and highlight the lines and words that you have changed. I am hoping, of course, that you will have changed more than just individual words, but highlighting serves the dual purpose of ensuring that I don’t miss some subtle changes and of helping you see just how much you have—or haven not—reconsidered. You may also annotate each poem at the bottom, explaining your stylistic and technical choices, if you wish.
My assessment of your work will be holistic; that is, I will not write comments on individual poems. I will be considering both improvement from draft to draft and the quality of your finished work—i.e., techniques, affect, originality and sophistication of language, and appropriateness of form.
You may have your portfolios back next semester, or, if this is your final semester here, just leave me a stamped, addressed envelope for their return. I will not finish all my grading until the day grades are due, and I do not discuss grades over email. Remember that grades are based on all your work for this class, not just on the final portfolio, though that is a major consideration.
