Sep 1     Developing a project.  Identify a mentor this week (Preliminary Conference).  Shields a-f (to p. 62).

Sep 8     Draft of prospectus due in class and must also be in mentor’s hands.  Second conference with mentor this week. Shields g-l (to p. 125). 

Sep 15   Final, signed-by-mentor copy of prospectus due in class.  Discussion: Portfolios, department goals (on line), reflective essays.  A guest: Vicci White (Career Center).

Sep 22   Discussion:  Ralph Waldo Emerson, “Power” from The Conduct of Life.  Electronic text available here.  Before class, e-mail me three representative sentences from the essay that capture both its theme and its style (explain why you think these are representative sentences). Rating form for prospectuses due.

Sep 29   Portfolio + reflective essay due.  A team editing exercise. A guest: Rhonda Brammer.

Oct 6      Ian Parker, “The Poverty Lab.”  Short class due to reading by Hemingway Society/PEN Award winner Brigid Pasulka @ 7:30 p.m.

Oct 13   Shields, m-s (to p. 165).   A guest: MaryJane Butters.

Oct 20   Progress reports on projects; presentation niceties. Shields, t-z (to p. 209).

Oct 27   Presentations I (Jennings, Tucker, Hanna, Browne, Lilienkamp/Bakken, Stoddard); critiques

Thanksgiving

Dec 1    Drafts of final projects due in class.  No extensions of this deadline.

Dec 8    Drafts returned, with comments.

Dec 15    Final drafts, incorporating revisions based on draft comments, due in my office.
