THE UNIVERSITY OF IDAHO

SPRING 2006

GARY WILLIAMS

English 429, Contemporary Fiction, is designed for upper-level English majors.  The texts are intended to give you a picture of the rich development of the novel as a form over the last half of the twentieth century and (as a sub-theme) to illustrate how stories are continually re-written.  Writers included are Vladimir Nabokov, Grace Paley, Donald Barthelme, and John Fowles from the 1950s-60s; Marilynne Robinson and Salman Rushdie from the 1980s; and David Mitchell, Annie Proulx, and Chris Ware from our current decade. As a focus of independent study, you’ll also examine the achievement of a writer of your choice who works/ed in shorter forms. Discussion format; lots of reading (including secondary critical/biographical material); about 20 pages of writing.
