Six Important Goals for Research Projects

 

1.      Clearly identify the problem.

Consider audience: the readers’ purpose and needs.
Give background information.

 2.      Provide accurate data.

Give enough information to validate and prove your conclusions.
Show where your data come from:
·        methods - how did you get the informatio?
·      cite sources

 3.      Be objective.

Report without bias.
Select data carefully.

 4.      Interpret your data.

Introduce
Present results, data, ideas, findings, figures, tables ….
Interpret, explain, analyze, synthesize

č  Do not dump data.

5.      Draw conclusions / make recommendations.

Focus on results and what they mean.
Explain what it all means.
Explain what the reader should do with the information.

č   Remember: reports do not make decisions; people do.  

6.      Make information accessible by organizing carefully.

Use headings and make them work.
Write clear paragraphs.
    Use topic sentences that focus on key terms.
        Deal with information in blocks.
        Provide a table of contents.
