Environmental Writing Oral Reports.

The purpose of this assignment is to share what you have learned about your project topic with colleagues in the class.

Requirements:

1.      1 .Keep the presentation short:  4 to 7 minutes

a.  You need to time yourself.

b.  Practice the presentation so you know how long it will take.

c.   After 7 minutes, I will have to cut you off so we have time for everyone.
  Time is import: plan a 5 minute talk so you don't run too long.ç
  A 4-5 minute talk will work well.

2.      2. Cover the main point and a couple main supporting ideas

a.  State the title of your article.

b.  State your main point.

c.   Explain some (not all) key ideas that you want to leave us with.

d.   State your conclusion. 

                     i.   Be sure we know what is important.

                     ii.  Try to give us some hope or closure/ give some recommendations about what we can do.

NOTE: you can’t cover all the points in your article in 3 to 5 minutes so:

è Select what’s important for us to know.

è Giving us two to four important and a few related facts/examples will be plenty.

3.     3.  Know what you want to say

a.  Use notes

b.  Practice so you know how you will say what you want to say.

c.  If you use PowerPoint, use just 2 or 3 slides and use very little text -- just a few bulleted points per slide. 

d.  Use an outline to speak from and put the outline on the overhead projector so we can see it.

4.      4. Grade: 

This assignment is worth 5 points.  I hope you’ll be motivated to share what you learned about your project with your colleagues.

Your grade will be based on:

1)      Clarity of the main point

2)      Usefulness and clarity of the main supporting details

3)      Usefulness and clarity of the conclusions/recommendations

4)      Organization

5)      Time (no more than 7 minutes)
