Half of a Yellow Sun, by Chimamanda Adichie

This assignment is worth 15% of your final grade.  The paper should be 3-5 pages in length (double spaced).  It is due on February 18 and should:

·         Incorporate specific references to HALF OF A YELLOW SUN

·         Address the paper topic

·         Make references to other course materials where appropriate

·         Have a clear thesis, organization, and conclusion

·         Show evidence of careful proofreading

·         Have correct grammar, spelling, etc.

Choose one of the following topics:

1.     Our discussions have often revolved around issues of gender, ethnicity, race, and class.  Choose one of those.  Discuss it in terms of the novel.

2.     One of the characters stated “Death is the price of our liberty.”  Use this quotation as a starting point for your paper.

3.     We have discussed the connections between the characters in this novel and African Americans.  Write a paper that analyzes these connections in HALF OF A YELLOW SUN.

4.    One reviewer praised HALF OF A YELLOW SUN for allowing us to understand the soul of Biafra.  Use this idea as a starting point for your paper.

5.    The course instructors chose this novel, in part, because it demonstrates the impact of war on people.  Use the novel to explore this issue.

6.    Kathy’s topics do not work for me, so I am choosing my own topic.  If you select this option, your choice of topic will also be part of the assessment.
