LIGHT RAIL

v

In recent years the popularity of light rail systems as a form of mass transit has been growing throughout the United States. Less than ten years ago there were only five new light rail lines on the books to be built, while today there is over 200 cities and counties proposing new light rail lines, known in generations past as tramways. Why is light rail becoming so popular?  The answer is simple. Municipalities see light rail as a tool to lesson our reliance on the automobile and to help ease the congestion and urban sprawl many cities have experienced in recent decades.  Light rails does this because of its ability to move people quickly with a high load capacity, compared to the space it takes up.

The three most important physical characteristics that affect the success of light rail are density, diversity, and design or the 3D’s.  Portland is an example of a city that has discovered how to use light rail effectively.
