Program
|
Our main goal for project one of our Landscape
Architecture 356 class is to make a complete re-design of East
Lewiston. East Lewiston
includes all of East Main St. including the Potlatch
Corporation property. For this
proposal, we assume that the Potlatch Corp. is
develops its Lewiston site to include housing and business districts
located on East Main St.
This project targets a maximum population of 15,000
people (half the population of Lewiston today), and at least 30-50% of
open space. A portion of Lewiston’s population is currently
dependent upon the Potlatch Corp. for direct employment or supporting
businesses. Therefore, this proposal includes uses which will
generate new jobs. |

Master Plan
|
The basic plan of the East Lewiston project
contains many features including plenty of mix-use
commercial/residential areas, commercial buildings, elementary school,
district retail plazas, waterfront district, marina, two parks,
residential sub-divisions, shopping district, and a twenty acre
amphitheatre plot (campground included).
Population of the area=10,002.
Open Space=37%. |
| Mix
Use Commercial, Residential |
Many of the major apartment complex’s
within the site area include ground level retail to promote as
much street life as possible to the project.
This also will promote small, local business in which Lewiston
thrives upon. Many of the
streets located by the mix use buildings include shade trees and
shrubbery, which helps to promote safety and security for pedestrians. |
|
Elementary
School
|
An Elementary School and possibly a Junior High
School will need to be included in this project to balance out the
large population factor. Lewiston’s
Independent School District is right now trying to pass a new High
School bond, which will make way for the building of a brand new High
School. A new High School
in the site area was not too much of a concern if the bond passes. |
|
Waterfront
District
|
Along
the bleaching pond located Northeast of Potlatch today is designated
for a Waterfront community that promotes a large amount of street life
and something that Lewiston has been neglected of since it’s
existence. Lewiston has
it’s own levee to promote recreational walking/biking/running along
the Clearwater and Snake River’s, but commercial areas alongside
waterfronts are not common. This
also is due to the fact that major flooding problems can occur without
the rock levee along the rivers. |
|
Parkways
|
There are two circular parkways located in the
heart of the site that also connect to each other by a four lane
roadway. These parkways
are the center of a major sub-division/commercial plot and mix-use
land development sites. An
interesting fact about the two parks is that from the center of one
park, you can easily see the center of the other one, nearly 1600 ft
away from each other. |
|
Amphitheatre
|
The
concert area is the main attraction for the site. Nearly a twenty-acre ground plot with a parking lot the same
size of it, the layout and appearance of this area gives breath taking
views and easy transportation in and out of this area.
One of Lewiston’s main events during the summer is Hot August
Nights, a small concert for the 60’s-70’s generation of people. Its attractions have been from Three Dog Night to Loverboy.
With the new amphitheatre, Lewiston’s attractions could shoot
from Peter Toole to Paul McCartney or Dave Matthews.
From behind the stage is a view of the Lewiston Hill while to
the left of the concert area is a park/pathway area for concertgoers.
The amphitheatre contains its own concessions, two bathroom
areas, restaurant, and historical building.
Behind the south end of the amphitheatre is a large buffer zone
to block sound from the residences.
There is also a campground located south of the area for people
who do not wish to stay in a hotel. |
Design Detail
|
|
 |
The
detailed twelve-acre plot design is located just west of the marina
and south of the small circular park area.
The detailed area includes attractions such as a waterfront
district, a mix-use apartment building with its own parkway, parking
lot, storage unit, and a section of the small circular parkway.
The shops mainly along the waterfront are for commercial
use only, except for the building located parallel to the apartment
buildings, which is designed as a restaurant overlooking the water.
The apartment buildings are six stories each and can hold
nearly 120 people in one building.
The main parking area is located south of the buildings but
there is also ¾ underground parking underneath each of the buildings.
The roadway along the left is a four-lane road including a turn
lane. There are street
trees along side the road, contained in a four-foot wide planter.
Adjacent to these planters are a seven-foot wide walkway and
also a six-foot wide bike path that runs alongside the apartment
buildings. Another
attraction to the area is the large concrete dock located at the
northeast end of the drawing that slopes down towards the water for
pedestrians who want to get a closer look. |

Focus Area 1
|
|
 |
This
design plot is located within the central area of the four mix-use
apartment complexes. Around
the perimeter of the area is a 24’ wide road lane that is strictly
for pedestrian use. The
only vehicle access to these roadways are for onsite deliveries for
the ground level retail shops. Located
in the center of the design is a large pool/water feature that is
roughly about 3-4’ tall. The
perimeter of the water feature is composed of
3’ of concrete which is suitable for a sitting area.
There are also nine other different style bench’s located
within the area. From
the center of the pool are eight walkways that direct you to a
different apartment complex or in-between two apartment complex’s.
In between the walkways and roadways are green spaces
containing nothing but grass, shrubs, and trees for public use.
Trash dispensers and lighting can also be found within the
design. |
|
Focus Area 2
|
|
 |
This
plot design is located just to the left of the four apartment
complex’s. Within this
area is mainly the restaurant that overlooks the water, and the small
park district that is located straight across from the restaurant.
The circular area that is part of the restaurant is a covered
patio area for customers who wish to lounge outside over the water. The gray, paved, circular area located to the left of the
building is a covered waiting area, including two benches and light
poles to enhance security. Across
from the waiting area is a planting area which one is able to walk
around to get to a small water feature.
Branching off of the planting area are two walkways that lead
to benched circular areas that are surrounded by different types of
trees and shrubberies. These
circular areas are mainly for people who wish to rest along the
waterfront or just to sit and stare at the large apartment buildings
or waterfront district. Trash
dispensers and light poles can also be found within the design. |

Three Dimensional Studies
|
|
| Perspective 1 |
|
|
This
perspective is looking towards the courtyard plaza which lies within
the four main apartment complex's. |
| Perspective 2 |
|
|
This
perspective is looking towards the four main apartment complex's from
the southeast. You can see the green space that lies in-between
the waterfront and the apartment buildings gives a good contrast and a
warm feeling towards the apartments. |
