| Goals |
The Following are the Goals
for the redesigning of East Lewiston. First to create an area of
town able to sustain itself. Second to reduce the amount of
traffic on East main. Third was to reduce the need to drive from ones
home to any sort of amenities. Fourth was to improve the look of
the land once the Potlatch factory was gone. Last was to create a
sense of community. |
Program
|
To redesign East Lewiston we needed
to have the capacity to hold 12,000 to 15,000 people in a 511 Acre area.
To do this the design implemented the following: 388 50' x 50' and 216
100' x 75' houses. As for apartments there are 2160 double to
family sized apartments at 1500 square foot; 905 singles at 800 square
foot, and 3210 mixed use apartments. With a total population at
14083 the next concern is the congestion of the East Main St. To
solve this two alternative routes have been added with different stops
and unique interest along each. The ability to travel to and from
work has been thought of also with a light rail system the travels from
commercial areas to residential. |

Schematic Design Process
|
One of the first steps in the
project was the schematic design. During this process we looked at
our 511 acre site as a whole and felt our way through doing three
designs. Taking our designs we looked at the original goal and
found which design best solved the most of our goals. There was no
one best plan a compilation of all three was taken and made into one
final schematic design. From this stage the master plan was next. |

Master Plan

|
Overview
_small.jpg)
|
The general concept wanted in this plan was
that of a old downtown river city character with a mixed use urban core.
The general idea was a central main street
with small business clustered and forming street walls at either end.
A second idea of mixed urban use is demonstrated by the residential
towers for middle income owners. The regional commercial
developments are removed from
the residential zones but connected by a light rail train, eliminating
the need for the private automobile for daily activities of commuting to
work and shopping. Pedestrian access
was a particular achievement of this master plan. All the major
commercial and recreational amenities
are within a reasonable walking distance of most residences.
Another important factor in the design was retention of views to the scenic Clearwater
River. |
| |
Also to be noted on the master plan it the
location of the trees, they have been deliberately broken up into
patches and clumps instead of solid forest to reduce chance of fires
jumping from tree to tree. |
Detail

|
In this detail we can see the use of trees on the
windward side of the building to help control the amount of wind that
gets through. Also the trees create convoluted edges which
drastically contradicts the brick building facades, giving wild life a
place to live. Also a major corridor has been created by
the main buildings along the street. |
| |
In the first detailed view the downtown
feel is very evident with small stores on the right hand side of the
road and larger stores on the left. Also on the left can be found
the local police and fire stations in a central location for easier
access. One may also notice the use of hidden parking under
overhangs in-between buildings. Also there is a large parking lot
located behind the buildings on the left with a pleasant view of the
river. In the top right there is a unique triangular shaped
building, this is the light rail station. A convenient location
where one can go shopping then get on the light rail and go home, all
without the use of a car. |
Detail

|
In the park we can see a more natural field approach.
the only structures there are the sporting fields and a small lake.
With no major structures there the feeling on enclosure is totally lost,
giving a relaxing feel. |
| |
The sports park is the focus of this view
with ample room a cool lake and plenty of sports opportunities, this
will bring the community together through fun alternative to sitting on
the couch and watching TV. Also located to the north east is a
park used for more relaxing purposes. |
Detail

|
The third detail view is of the opening mixed use zone
just left of the bridge. This unique zone will help alleviate the
congestion of traffic from near by roads by offering two separate
alternatives to get on East Main St. |

|
Focus Area

|
The focus area shown here is of a complex located where
present day Potlatch is occupying. This complex is a large 15
stories building linked together through underground parking and
in-between the two taller structures is a mini shopping store and gym
with all the amenities needed. With large structures like
these is creates a corridor in the center of the two buildings.
This helps with flow as well and give a balance to the design.
Wind will be blocked for the most part with a small amount being
channeled into the corridor. |
 |
There is a great feeling of enclosure in
the focus are because of the great size and curved effect of the
buildings. This also creates a unique space inside the courtyard
that almost seems like another room of the focus area. |
| |
|
Detail

|
Taking a closer look at the courtyard in-between the two
complexes we can see a few noticeable things. The first of which is when
the vehicular traveler enters the pedestrian zone the paving of the road
changes color and height as it bumps up when leaving. Second is
the pool in the center made to entice people to come out and try there
luck at making a wish and tossing it in the pool. |
| |
|
Detail

|
Closer still we can see how the pathway that
follows the road is well lit and will also encourage foot of bike
travel. There are three distinct materials used for paving each
indicating the type of travel use. the dark is strictly vehicular,
where as the intermediate grey is both car and pedestrian. The
lightest grey is strictly pedestrian transit. |

Three Dimensional Studies
|
These studies are made to look at the
courtyard and buildings from a persons view and an eagle eye view. |
| |
|
Detail

|
Here we can see a nice view of entering the courtyard
with its linear roads and walkways. The reflective glass of the
buildings exteriors creates an illusion of a larger area then what is
really there. Here is a birds eye
view of the complexes the main features show here is the track built on
top of the north building and the roof top garden on the southern
building. |
