Welcome to the East Lewiston Revitalization Master Plan and Focus Design project presentation by .  (click on the icons for a larger image)

Goals & Objectives

Create a revitalization design for an industrial area of Lewiston which will provide housing equal to no less than 10 units per acre and also to give something back to the environment, which has been neglected and abused by industry in the area for so long.

Program

Design and create an addition for Lewiston, not a replacement. New and old areas of Lewiston should visit and rely on each other.

Create a sizeable sum of wetland and wildlife habitat. So much of the current site has become a blight on the landscape, and any new design must make amends and give back to the environment.

Pathway and corridor system linking different areas providing easy pedestrian access and wildlife habitat/migration.

Close access to light commercial centers for quick shopping.

High Density housing with incentives to give up traditional suburban housing.

Schematic Design Process

Several drawings, three, were laid out on tissue paper during the design process. These varied greatly in design with some breaching the dike in places, and other keeping it in tact. Some were extremely high density and other closer to typical suburban design.

Master Plan

Overview

Modern design to building and landscape architecture with open and airy feel to surrounding high density buildings. A touch of beach front design, with pedestrian shopping areas and open views.

Breach portion of dike, creating more waterfront property with views

Remove excessive railroad tracks, route one on or near existing tracks.

Grid design without the grid feel.

Community amenities such as Fire & Police Stations, Schools, Library, and bus stops.

Large wetland and wild life preserve located on the east side of the current Potlatch facilities.

Pathway system incorporates nodes and corridors of varying sizes to provide good habitat for urban wildlife. The complexity of the network further enhances movement. Corridors created by masses of trees and shrubs also help to regulate wind by deflecting wind over the canopies.

Breakdown of Area

Some of the included site features include, multiple churches in a variety of sizes and locations. Some are located on busy intersections with large plazas, others are located within clustered residential areas. There are also two elementary schools, one middle school, a library, fire station, police station, and civic centers. There are also bus stops located within walking distance to every residential structure, and plenty of pedestrian pathways along the park corridors.

Detail

This detail view of the master plan depicts a large shopping area. While all residents are within walking distance of smaller shopping areas, this large center serves residents with larger commercial stores, such as Fred Meyer, for weekly or less frequent shopping. There is also a bus hub and plaza between the buildings. Parking would be located in the rear except for handicap accessible spots.

Detail

This detail view of the master plan depicts a civic center with outdoor and indoor support for large group gatherings such as concerts, exhibits, and conventions. It is flanked on two sides by park corridor, making it easily access by foot or bike, and on the west by the Clearwater River. A possible boat dock would allow for even water entry.

Focus Area

Overview

A contained upper middle class living complex which meshes with the surrounding environment. Complex needs to have a great deal of open spaces and outdoor seating areas, to support large resident population.

High density living environment with personal spaces and views.

Additional living amenities to compensate for lack of private open space.

Uniform street front paving style to emphasize shop entrances and plaza areas.

Underground resident parking with elevator and stair access to buildings.

A variety of enclosure types ranging from quiet sunken areas of refuge, a concealed and elevated patio, to large open gathering areas. Plantings, beds, and potted vegetation help to define edges and spaces throughout the site.

Buildings with natural ventilation to reduce energy costs.

Roof gardens with quiet outdoor rooms and masks of vegetation to hide building equipment and structure.

Easy access to living areas and facilities with extensive pathways and direct routes.

Safety issues are addressed with lighted pathways and limited areas of distant or solitary seclusion. Landscape shelters and outdoor rooms are kept close to high traffic areas and are well lit.

Detail

This detail looks at a patio area on the North side of the focus area image. The image like the others was create in Photoshop using the cad file as a base. The steps down from the central complex walkway is bordered with grass beds and tall leafy trees. Down from the steps is a large patio stamped with a traditional fan pattern and laden with table and chair seating. A level of prospect is achieved by elevating those choosing to sit along the grass beds under the tree canopies, overlooking the patio. A winding pathway with an alternative paving material cuts through the patio area, which is bordered by bollard lighting.

Detail

This detail looks at a bus stop on the south east side of the focus area image. The image like others was created in Photoshop using the cad file as a base. The bus stop is the shiny roofed structure. A fountain plaza with a bird mosaic, which is a node of the pathway system, can be see above and to the right of the bus stop.

Three Dimensional Studies

Overview

Several drawings were done showing perspective shots, to better understand how the area felt as a whole, and also from a pedestrian view. This view is a perspective shot looking at the whole focus area. The image was rendered by hand using an AutoCAD base. It portrays the dominating forms of the buildings.  The drawing shows that the buildings are subdivided and a pedestrian scale is established  and softened by the large amount of vegetation and the large open space surrounding them.

Plaza View

This view is a pedestrian perspective of the area between the three largest buildings on the site. The plaza has a large shallow pond in the middle, surrounded by rocks and grassy vegetation. Surrounding the pond are alternating patches of grassy seating areas and private areas sunken below the rest of the plaza and bordered by planters. These private areas offer refuge to those looking for privacy in a potentially very busy area. Each entrance area between the buildings is flanked by small planters filled with large columnar trees and brought down to people scale with smaller shrubs and grasses.
