DEGREES
Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science
The Bachelor of Arts and the Bachelor of Science degree is offered to
students interested in the study of theatre within a liberal arts
framework, or as part of a teacher education program. Because theatre is
by nature inter-disciplinary, it is an excellent way to enhance a
general education, encouraging artistic sensitivity and skills in
critical-thinking, communication and collaboration.
The Bachelor of Fine Arts
Competitive and demanding, B.F.A. is a program of study for students
interested in pursuing careers in professional theatre. Areas of
specialization are Performance or Design/Technology (scenery, costumes
or lighting). Entry into the program is by audition or portfolio review
during the sophomore or junior year, and requires faculty approval for
acceptance. The progress of B.F.A. candidates is monitored closely each
semester, utilizing performance juries and portfolio reviews.
The Master of Fine Arts
The department offers Idaho’s Idaho’s only Master of Fine Arts in
theatre. Areas of specialization available: Performance, Directing or
Design/Technology (scenery, costumes or lighting). In addition to UI’s
graduate school admission requirements, the M.F.A. Program in theatre
requires a 3.0 GPA, a statement of goals or intent, three letters of
recommendation, and (for design applicants) a design portfolio (for
acting students) a four- to six-minute audition tape.
