DEGREES
The Department of English offers five degree programs–a B.A. degree in
English, an M.A. degree in literature, an M.A. degree in TESL, an M.A.T.
degree, and an M.F.A. in Creative Writing. In addition the department
offers courses in a wide area of English studies – courses in
composition and rhetoric, creative writing, linguistics, the teaching of
English, as well as literature classes. Many of the courses taught in
the department form part of the general-education (core) curriculum
required of all undergraduates.
Undergraduate Study in the English department includes all
undergraduate courses except composition classes. For the most part,
these are the courses that lead to a B.A. in English in one of these
four areas:
- The Literature Emphasis
- The Creative Writing Emphasis
- The Professional Emphasis
- The Teaching Emphasis
For more information, go to the pages describing the programs in
Undergraduate Studies or talk to Professor Kerry McKeever (mckeever@uidaho.edu),
the Director of Undergraduate Studies.
Most students taking English courses in any given semester are taking
writing courses that form part of the Composition Program. For more
information about these courses, consult the pages describing this
program or talk to Professor Gordon Thomas (thomas@uidaho.edu),
the Director of Writing. The Composition Program also includes graduate
courses in composition theory and rhetoric, as well as undergraduate
courses leading to a Writing minor. The Director of Writing is also
responsible for training and supervising the teaching assistants who
teach most of the introductory writing courses.
The Director of Creative Writing, Professor Robert Wrigley (rwrigley@uidaho.edu),
has responsibility for the undergraduate courses in creative writing and
M.F.A. program at the graduate level. To learn more about creative
writing courses, talk to him or consult the pages about Creative
Writing.
Graduate study in English at the University of Idaho involves four
programs.
For more information about graduate studies, consult the appropriate
