Course Syllabus for Clarinet Private Instruction

Fall 2009

General requirements

  1. Attendance: Attendance is required. For every un-excused absence your grade will go down one full letter for each absence encountered. Excused absences will be granted if you call 24 hours in advance so studio time can be reallocated to someone else. Excuse absences are any Family orientated occasion and sickness. Please call in advance. (885-7363 or e-mail rcole@uidaho.edu) All absences must have documentation from a third party. (Physician or Family member). It is expected that all Clarinet events are required attendance.  That includes Northwest Wind Quintet performances, Solo Clarinet recital performances both Faculty and Student and Master Classes in Clarinet given by faculty and guest artists.

  2. Preparation: It is expected that at all levels (114,115,124, 134 plus upper division numbers) that all students will prepare to the extent that no more than 3 mistakes per line will be heard during the lesson. The lesson is not a performance, but your personal progress will be greatly enhanced if you take the time to eliminate problems in your playing that you already know how to fix. Taking the time in lessons to stop mistakes from happening will save time and effort for us both. This extends to both solo and technical material.

  3. Clarinet Studio: Students that are enrolled in 115 and above are required to be in Studio. Those people who are in 114 are invited to come, if they so desire, and are very appreciated. During this time period we will be working on the business of Clarinetistry , performance and Chamber music’s that are available. Much of the time spent will be on general concerns of our week. Personal goals and methods of achieving these goals will be main topics of concern. Your attendance to studio, departmental and convo is a requirement of the School of Music and your private study.

  4. Departmental and Convo: For all students who are enrolled in 115 and above this is an attendance requirement at the general Som level. If there is a Clarinet player on these performances and you do not go, your grade will be lowered one full letter point.

  5. Juries: Juries are a requirement at the Som level for all people taking private lessons. Exception is 114
