The
foundation of the Certificate in Diversity and Stratification is the
innovative course: Soc/Anth 301: Introduction to Diversity and
Stratification. The course is
now available in an online format making it accessible to interested
individuals around the state of Idaho. The interactive, interdisciplinary course provides important
academic foundations for understanding diversity issues and their presence
in the community and the workplace. As
a comprehensive introduction, the course alone can provide in-depth
diversity education. The
course is also the first step participants take toward earning the
Certificate should participants have interest in completing the entire
program.
Course
Description: This introductory course examines multiple dimensions of diversity
and stratification in the United States. We examine the dynamics of
difference and how such difference often leads to inequalities and
stratification. Specifically we focus our study on race, social class,
physical ability, and gender as an introduction to diversity and
stratification. The course provides opportunities for students to
understand and apply theoretical frameworks to lived experience, to
critically examine their own personal experience related to difference and
privilege, and to identify ways to participate in creating a more just
world.
Other
courses that fulfill the requirements for the Certificate are also
available online. Thus, students and professionals can work toward the
certificate from their current locations.
