DESCRIPTION:

Skin-deep is a two day intensive workshop designed to personally examine the dynamics and effects of race, racism, sexism, and homophobia through authentic dialogue across and within groups.  In this workshop students will dismantle the dynamics of social oppression including fear, insecurity, isolation , misinformation, and stereotypes.  Through honest sharing and active listening in a safe environment, a more inclusive student community will emerge.

Dates/Time, Location: 

September 25, 26, 27 at the Best Western Lodge at Rivers Edge in Orofino, Idaho.  Students will depart on Friday, September 25th at 5 p.m. and return at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 27th

Application:

There is a limit of 28 participants based on an application process that includes emailing Dr. Mark Edwards at medwards@uidaho.edu.  Your email should include a short paragraph discussing why you want to participate in Skin Deep, your name, racial/ethnic identity, sex, sexual orientation, religion, socioeconomic class, and nationality.  You may also include other information you think is pertinent.  All information provided will be confidential and will be used for determination of participation.  The goal is to create a balance of social identities in the workshop to develop a diverse group that can engage in authentic dialogue.

Cost: 

For students selected to participate, all expenses will be covered by the Office of Diversity, Equity and Community at the University of Idaho.

The workshop can be used for upper division sociology elective credits and/or for the applied component of the Certificate in Diversity & Stratification.  

REQUIREMENTS:

Full attendance is required and other requirements will be discussed during the workshop.

To earn one credit, students must apply for participation and then, if accepted, register for the workshop credit PRIOR to attending and complete all requirements as explained by the instructor.  Students must receive permission for the workshop credit from Mark Edwards.  He can be contacted via email: medwards@uidaho.edu.
