This is a take-home exam, due during the regular class period on Thursday, March 24, 2005.

You may refer to your class notes, handouts and class reading material in completing this examination. Your exam should reflect your own thinking and aesthetic responses.

TH 404 Undergraduate Students - You are expected to answer 1 question.

TH 504 Grad Students - You are expected to answer 2 questions.

This exam is worth 20% of your final grade.


1. Discuss the multilingual nature of Indonesian performance forms. As a cultural outsider, how do you relate to this idea of multilingual theatre? Do you find parallels in any Western performance forms?

2. Wayang Kulit (shadow puppet theatre) functions in a multiplicity of roles within Indonesian society: as newspaper, television, history book and Bible. Are there any Western parallels (contemporary or historical)? Discuss.

3. Wayang Kulit (shadow puppet theatre) and the Indonesian dance genres have influenced each other in story content, movement style and visual symbols. Are there any Western theatre or performance forms that share characteristics in a similar way? Discuss.

4. Consider the blending of Hindu and Islamic influences in Javanese & Balinese performance. How does the fusion of religious beliefs affect attitudes within the culture?
