Course Readings

The syllabus indicates that you are to read some evolution articles for week 3.  These "articles" are in the form of a web site on human evolution linked to this skull (Australopithecus afarensis):

You should read all of the pages listed on this site (Chart of Human Evolution; Tour of the Human Fossil Record; The Hominid Brain; Hominid Tools; Hominid Fossil Sites and Patterns of Hominid Dispersal).

The site discusses the human fossil record for the last 5 million years, the various species represented in that record, and the material culture, the tools, associated with those species.  In the "chart of human evolution and his discussion of the various species, the author of the site explains one of many possible scenarios of the relations between the species.  Keep in mind that some of these relations are controversial and compare his formulation with the basic ideas presented in class.

Take notice of the visible differences in the skulls from the different species and the drastic differences in tool technology over the years. Also, note the dramatic time depth involved in the evolution of humans.

You are responsible for reading, thinking about, and digesting the material from the various pages of this site as if it were your textbook.  As we discuss human evolution in class, the major points will become clear.

You should also check out these web sites for more information on biological evolution--click on one of the skulls below:
