Service Learning Service Learning Option "Service learning is a form of experiential education in which students engage in activities that address human and community needs (defined by the community) together with structured opportunities intentionally designed to promote student learning and development. Reflection and reciprocity are key concepts of service-learning."Barbara Jacoby, 1996. For this class you can get service learning credit on your transcript by spending approximately 15 hours working to put on the UI's annual Tutxinmepu Pow Wow, which is April , 2011. You will work with Steven Martin, the director of the UI's Native American Student Center. Learn about Native culture, traditions, and values through helping to produce this important cultural event. Students will be given opportunities for reflection and tools for measuring the learning they gained through the experience of service and will produce a Reflective essay illustrating what meaning they gained from the experience as connected to our course. Those that choose this Service Learning option will write three rather than four papers for the course. |
