Paragraph Revision
Instructions: Based on the results of your style check of a paragraph of the Section of the Final Report, you should try to revise the paragraph. E-mail the paragraph revision to me as a Microsoft Word 97 or higher document. thompson@uidaho.edu

Especially work on

  1. Using transition words
  2. Using a mix of long and short sentences
  3. Using subordinators to combine short sentences
  4. Avoiding Be verbs
  5. Avoiding Passive

Note:

When you have sentences that end and begin with the same words, combine the sentences:

Weak: Sodium bearing waste is secondary waste. This waste is acidic.
Better: Sodium bearing waste is secondary waste that is acidic.
Better: Sodium bearing waste is acidic, secondary waste

When you have sentences that begin with “this,” you can often combine sentences.

Weak: Once the waste has breaches its containment, it can reach the environment though groundwater. This could be detrimental to ….
Better: Once the waste has breaches its containment, it can reach the environment though groundwater, which could be detrimental to….
