Why do People Read Technical Writing?
Instructions:
  1. Read the material below.

As we said before, people read technical writing to get new information, new information that they need

They read with a specific purpose, and usually that purpose is not to be entertained.
So readers of technical documents are task oriented. They read to get information so they can

bulletTo complete a task
bulletSolve a problem
bulletMake a decision
bulletAnswer a question / learn something

Notes: Often people will read for more than one reason. For example:

bulletAn electrical engineer wants to find an efficient way to stabilize the power a synchronous motor is using.
bulletA manager is evaluating proposals for managing waste from a potato processing plan.
bulletA civil engineer wants to investigate methods for reducing the selenium run-off from a mine site.

The writer’s task:

bulletUnderstand the readers’/ the audience’s purpose
bulletUnderstand their needs
bulletUnderstand why they are reading your document
bulletMeet the reader’s needs
