Dear Applicant:

We are happy to inform you that you are among the 20 applicants we are considering for employment with Techno International. Your records are impressive, and we believe you would be an asset to our firm.

Because of the large number of applicants and the limited number of positions, however, further screening is necessary. For our purposes interviews are insufficient: we have found that the skills we seek are best demonstrated in a reflective, rather than pressured, situation. Thus, we require applicants to submit a written statement explaining their educational background and why they decided to go into the field they have chosen.

In a brief three or four paragraph letter, please give us the following information about yourself:

  1. What is your educational experience? Be sure to state your class or when you will graduate. Please mention what types of English writing courses you have taken, especially freshman composition (English 102 at the U of I) and where you took it (if not at the U of I).
  2. What degree are you currently seeking?
  3. What are your main educational interests?
  4. Why did you choose your major?
  5. What kind of writing do you do for your course work?
  6. If you are working in your chosen professional field, tell us about your position: Who do you work for? What kind of work do you do? What kind of writing do you do?
  7. What kinds of research are you engaged in (past or present)? If you are working on a research project, briefly explain what the project involves, what your position in the project is, and why the project worthwhile.
  8. What specific topics would you like to research and explore further for this class?
  9. What do you expect to gain from or accomplish by working in your field?

We look forward to reading the analysis of yourself and your goals.

Sincerely,

Phil Druker
