Revision Symbols

I will use these symbols to mark your rough drafts and final drafts.  This is mostly in alphabetic order.

 

Amb

Ambiguous.  The idea is not clear—it could have various meanings/interpretations.

Awk

Awkward

Bib form

Bibliographic form.  Use a correct one.

CS

Comma splice. Do not connect two sentences with a comma.

Wrong: Bill was weak, he could not swim to shore

Right: Bill was weak.  He could not swim to shore

CF

In-text Citation Form.  Use the correct citation form.  I require: author, date, page

Dict

Diction.  You have made an odd or incorrect word choice.  Find a better word.

Frag

Fragment.  Fragments are incomplete sentences.  Do not write them.

FS

Fused Sentence.  You have incorrectly connected two sentences

Wrong: We have known them for years they are our best friends.

Right: We have known them for years.  They are our best friends

lc

Lower case.  No capital letter.

UC

Upper case.  Use capital letter.

Mod

Incorrect Modification (dangling modifier or modification not clear)

Wrong: Unable to swim well, the lifeguard rescued Jim.

Right:  Jim, who was unable to swim well, was rescued by the lifeguard.

Nec?

Necessary?  Is this necessary?  (Probably not)

Pass

Passive.  Do not overuse passive. Avoid passive.

Passive:  The letter was written by Jim.

Better:  Jim wrote the letter.

Para

Paragraph. 

Poss

Possession.  Use an apostrophe to show possession or use the correct possessive pronoun (my, mine, yours, hers….).

Pred

The end of your sentence does not work with the beginning of your sentence.

Prn Agr

Pronoun agreement.  Use a different pronoun.

Wrong: A baboon grooms their mate.

Right:  A baboon its mate.  Baboons groom their mates.

Punct

Punctuation.  Use correct punctuation.

Ref

Reference. (Pronoun reference error).  Change the pronoun to indicate clearly which word it refers to:

Wrong: When she set the pitcher on the glass-topped table, it broke.

Better: When she set the pitcher on the glass-topped table, the pitcher/the table                         top broke.

Rep

Repetitious.  Don’t repeat words or ideas.

R O

Run on sentence.  Do not write long strings of ideas connected with “and.”

Sp

Spelling

S-v agr

Subject- Verb Agreement.  The subject and the verb of the sentence must agree.

Wrong: Each of the students have a book.

Right:  Each of the students has a book.

Tense

Verb Tense.  Use a better verb tense.

Wdy

Wordy.  Write concise sentences.  Omit extra words.

WW

Wrong word

Repeated error.  Check above in your document.
