CERTIFIED ALCOHOL AND DRUG COUNSELOR

(CADC)

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

Work Experience

Documentation of three (3) years of work experience working directly with AODA clients, in the ICRC 12 Core Functions* is required.  Work experience MUST BE supervised by a Certified Alcohol/Drug Counselor (CADC), a Certified Clinical Supervisor (CCS), or equivalent.  A Baccalaureate or advanced degree from an accredited university or college, in the field of Behavioral Sciences, may be substituted for one of the three (3) years of experience required for certification.  The list of acceptable degrees for substitution includes but is not limited to Sociology, Social Work, Psychology, Social Science, Counseling, and Alcohol/Drug Studies.                                

A.      AODA work experience equals three (3) years poly-drug counseling equivalent to 6,000 hours.

B.      Full or part-time experience is acceptable. 

C.      Practicum hours will count as work experience.

D.      Work experience may be paid or voluntary.

            E.       A.A., N.A., etc. meetings do not count as work experience.

 

Supervision

Documentation of 300 hours of supervision with a minimum of ten (10) hours in each of the 12 Core Functions* is also required.  A Supervisor MUST BE a Certified Alcohol/Drug Counselor and/or a Certified Clinical Supervisor.

 

A.      Supervision is defined as a formal, systematic process that focuses on skill development and integration of knowledge and generally occurs early in a career.

B.      This training must take place in a setting where AODA counseling is being provided.

C.      This training may be a part of the eligible work experience.

D.      This training may be completed under more than one supervisor or agency.

 

Education

Documentation of 270 hours of education specifically related to the ICRC Performance Domains* (Assessment, Counseling, Case Management, Education, and Professional Responsibility) is required. No less than 30 hours in each domain.  Education is defined as formal classroom education (workshops, seminars, institutions, in-service [limited], and college/university courses).

 

A.      Documentation of a high school diploma or an equivalent.  (Documentation is not required if applicant is documenting credit for college courses or a degree.)

B.      A maximum of 30 hours in-service is acceptable.

C.      One credit hour is equal to 15 clock hours.

D.      All education and college/university courses MUST BE documented with an OFFICIAL college transcript or certificate of achievement.

E.  Practicum hours cannot be counted as education but can be counted as education experience.

Applicants must complete and document six (6) hours of training in Professional Ethics.  The six (6) hours must include the following areas:  Federal and State Laws, Client welfare as a primary concern, professional competence supervision/development, financial issues, personal wellness, and relationships to professionals and institutions.

 

Letters of Reference

Three (3) letters of reference which are directly related to the applicant's professional knowledge and skills are required (an evaluation form will be furnished).

 

A.      One (1) letter must be submitted by the applicant's supervisor.

B.      All letters of reference must be sent directly to the IBADCC office by the person evaluating the applicant.

Testing

Applicants are required to pass the ICRC/AODA Substance Abuse Exam (written) and the CPM Oral Exam. The written exam will be given the SECOND Friday of March and September of each year in each region of the state. Applicants may be asked to test in another region if necessary.  The CPM Oral Exam is given twice yearly in June and October and is usually held in Boise, ID. Applicants must pass the written exam before they are eligible to take the oral. A list of reading material and study guide from which to prepare for the test is included in the Application/Manual.

 

A completed application must be submitted by the following deadlines in order to be eligible to test for the written CADC exam.

 

For March Testing:                 Deadline is January 10

For September Testing:                 Deadline is July 10

 

Renewal Procedures

Documentation of 20 hours of continuing education is required annually.

 

1.       Education must be related to the knowledge and skills necessary to perform the tasks within the Performance Domains*.

2.       A minimum of 15 hours MUST be obtained in a classroom setting (e.g., workshops, seminars, academic studies, etc.).

3.       Only 25% of all continuing education credits can be met by taking home study courses.

4.       A maximum of five (5) hours in-service training is acceptable.

5.       Education presented by the candidate does not count toward continuing education hours.

 

Residency

As an ICRC member board, Idaho subscribes to the residency requirement of ICRC.  If a counselor lives or works in an ICRC state, they must  certify in that state.  If a counselor lives or works in a non-ICRC state, that counselor is allowed to certify in an ICRC state, including Idaho.
